 COVID-19 community spread in Amherst area: residents encouraged to stay home when sick, get tested, and get vaccinated

There are signs of COVID-19 community spread in the Amherst and Cumberland County area as a result of the clusters in Nova Scotia Health’s Northern Zone. Public Health is asking you to follow these measures to protect your community and yourself from further spread of the virus:

1.     Stay home if you’re sick.

            If you or your family members have symptoms, keep them home. COVID-19 symptoms are:

·      A new or worsening cough

            OR two or more of the following: 

·      Fever (chills, sweats)

·      Runny nose/nasal congestion 

·      Sore throat

·      Headache

·      Shortness of breath (difficulty breathing)

2.     Get tested.

PCR Testing

If you have symptoms, get a PCR test, even if you are fully vaccinated. Stay isolated until you receive a negative test result. Visit https://covid-self-assessment.novascotia.ca/en or call 811 to book an appointment at:

The Millbrook Election Committee (MEC) is seeking input to help in the drafting of Millbrook's Custom Election Code.

The MEC is a community-based group of band members, with diverse backgrounds, tasked with developing a custom leadership selection process that will replace the Indian Act election process.

The group has been meeting since January of 2021 and is nearing completion. Please answer the following questions to help the MEC with their policy development.

Millbrook Band Administration and Health Centre will be closed for both National Truth and Reconciliation Day (September 30th) and Treaty Day (October 1st).

On behalf of the Chief & Council and Millbrook Administration staff, the Administration Office will be observing the newly created statutory holiday, the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on Thursday, September 30th. 

This day honours the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. September 30th is also Orange Shirt Day and we encourage everyone to wear orange on Thursday to raise awareness. 

We welcome those who are able to participate in reconciliation events located in various locations in Miꞌkmaꞌki. There are events hosted in the communities of Millbrook, Sheet Harbour and Halifax. (See attached flyer) 

We look forward to celebrating this day of remembrance and reconciliation with you all.

TikTok Accelerator for Indigenous Creators, presented by the National Screen Institute, will provide up to 30 Indigenous creators with customized, hands-on online training to succeed on TikTok and beyond.

Learn how to maximize TikTok to grow your community and share your unique stories in a safe and respectful online space. Taught by industry experts, TikTok creators and members of the TikTok Canada team, you will learn essential storytelling techniques, create a robust marketing plan and develop a series of videos to set you on the path to success.

Program dates: November 8 to December 17, 2021

About TikTok Accelerator for Indigenous Creators

TikTok Accelerator for Indigenous Creators is designed to empower Indigenous content creators to succeed on TikTok and within the creative media industries through skills-based education sessions, hands-on exercises and connections with professional industry experts and peers. The curriculum is designed with traditional and spiritual elements.

Training is part-time: two to three 90-minute online sessions per week spread over six weeks on topics such as:

• Navigating TikTok (social presence, usage, audience engagement, trends, analytics and best practices)

• Technical training (essential filmmaking techniques, content creation, lighting, editing and effects)

• Media career building (personal branding, collaborations with brands and other creators, discovering your niche, goal setting and motivational coaching)

• Social responsibility and digital wellness (community management, safety and handling negativity)

This program was developed by the National Screen Institute and TikTok Canada with curriculum guidance from Indigenous content creator Sherry Mckay (@sherry.mckay), and filmmakers Justina Neepin (@justinaneepin) and Roger Boyer.
